The Chorus and Orchestra of Charles University in Prague welcome new members!
The Orchestra welcomes new members to its string section, and will also gladly hear from advanced oboe, bassoon and horn players. String players are not usually auditioned, but undergo an informal period of probation before membership is confirmed. Wind players on particular instruments are individually auditioned. Rehearsals are held in English, and knowledge of Czech is not essential. All instrumental players should please email us as soon as possible on info@sboraorchestruk.cz for more information, telling us as much as possible about their orchestral experiences so far. It is necessary to let us know before attending the first rehearsal, so that we can email you scanned music in advance. Our first rehearsal for new members will be on 2 October at 7.30 p.m. Rehearsals are normally held weekly on Wednesday evenings, and there will be an important weekend workshop on 2-3 November. Our concerts this semester start very early, with a prestigious event on 13 October – so please join us as soon as possible. We can look forward to seven large-scale concerts this semester, including major works by Smetana and Suk (this year being Czech Music Year), amongst others, with performances in beautiful halls and churches in Prague and further afield. There will, in addition, be several traditional Christmas concerts in December. We regret that we are unable to provide instruments or to advise on their hire.
Our Chorus warmly welcomes new singers in all voices. A quick and informal voice trial for potential new members is held at the first rehearsal of the semester, on 2 October, 5-7 p.m. at the Charvátův Sál, on the first floor of the hospital building at U Nemocnice, 1 (the closest tram stop being Moráň). It is not necessary to write to us in advance – just feel free to come along to the above Wednesday session and introduce yourself to us. (But do please write to us if you are unable to attend that session, so that we can try to devise some alternative arrangement for you – perhaps via zoom.) Rehearsals are generally held weekly (with particular exceptions), in English as well as in Czech, so the language barrier need not be a problem! There will also be a Saturday workshop on 12 October for new members (to prepare for a major concert the next day!), and a full weekend workshop for all members (9-10 November), attendance at which is essential (and also the weekend 26-27 October is held in reserve, should we need more coaching). This semester we plan to perform works by Smetana, Dvořák, Janáček and others, beautiful Czech folksong arrangements, and a series of traditional Christmas concerts with carols and the much-loved Ryba Christmas Mass. This semester we also look forward to collaborations with several other friendly choirs.
